Google Maps for iPhone: Revamped Design and Improved Directions
Google Maps, following its Android update in July, has now introduced a sheet-based redesign for the iPhone app. This redesign replaces most fullscreen UIs within the app.
Upon launching the map, users will notice that all bottom sheets in the app now feature more rounded corners. When tapping on a place listing and sliding up, the map remains visible at the top behind the status bar. This feature helps maintain context as users navigate through the app.
One significant usability change is the removal of the back button at the left side of the search bar for closing listings. Instead, a new ‘x’ in the right corner of the sheet next to the share shortcut serves this purpose, while the search option has been eliminated. This change aims to enhance reachability and one-handed usage, aligning with Apple Maps’ behavior.

Additionally, Google Maps has revamped the directions UI accessible through the floating action button. The initial page for entering a destination remains unchanged and occupies the fullscreen.
Once a location is entered, the top of the screen displays the start and end locations in a floating rectangle. The mode transportation switcher has been relocated to the bottom for improved accessibility.
This sheet-based redesign was initially rolled out widely on Android in July and is now being implemented in Google Maps for iPhone with version 25.10.2.
