Android 17 is getting its own version of Apple’s Handoff

Google Introduces New Android Feature Resembling Apple’s Handoff

Google is set to launch a new Android feature that bears a striking resemblance to Apple’s Handoff. This feature will enable users to initiate a task on their Android smartphone and seamlessly continue it on a compatible tablet.

Dubbed “Continue On,” this feature is initially unidirectional, allowing tasks to transition from a smartphone to a tablet. Android tablet users will notice the Continue On icon in the dock, suggesting the most recently used app from their phone, provided it is also installed on the tablet.

With this feature, Android users can effortlessly access documents they were previously working on or dive back into the email they had open. In certain scenarios, it may even direct users to the tablet’s browser for seamless continuation of web-based tasks.

Google has announced that the Continue On feature will be available for testing in the Android 17 RC1 build, the first release candidate version. The timeline for its release has not been disclosed, nor has information regarding support for tablet-to-mobile handoffs. This development, coupled with the recent unveiling of Android-powered Googlebook laptops, signals a significant stride towards enhanced Android interoperability that could rival Apple’s renowned inter-device coordination.
