Government Transparency: Leveraging Google, Microsoft, and xAI for AI Model Review
US Government to Review New AI Models Before Public Release
In a groundbreaking move, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and Elon Musk’s xAI have agreed to allow the US government to conduct pre-deployment evaluations of new AI models before they are released to the public. The announcement, made by the Commerce Department’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) on Tuesday, aims to enhance the assessment of cutting-edge AI capabilities.
CAISI has already begun evaluating models from leading AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, with 40 reviews completed thus far. These partnerships have been realigned to reflect the priorities outlined in President Donald Trump’s AI Action Plan, as reported by Bloomberg.
Looking ahead, the White House is considering further steps to oversee new AI models. A recent report from The New York Times suggests that an executive order may be issued to bring together tech executives and government officials for this purpose.
Chris Fall, the director of CAISI, emphasized the importance of independent and rigorous measurement science in understanding frontier AI and its implications for national security. He highlighted the significance of industry collaborations in advancing this work in the public interest.
