Kansas City Schools Embrace Innovation with MacBook Neo Integration
Apple’s latest addition to their lineup, the MacBook Neo, has been a massive success since its release in March, quickly becoming one of the most popular laptops in the company’s history. The high demand for the $599 MacBook Neo has led to shipping times of several weeks, with educational institutions being the primary drivers of this demand.
During Apple’s Q2 2026 earnings call, Tim Cook highlighted the trend of schools transitioning from Chromebooks and Windows PCs to the MacBook Neo. Kansas City Public Schools was specifically mentioned as an example of this shift. The district recently confirmed their decision to become an “all-Apple district,” citing the need to invest in the right student technologies for the future.
Kansas City Public Schools announced plans to replace over 30,000 Windows PCs and Chromebooks with more secure and reliable Apple devices. They have already procured 4,500+ MacBook Neos for students in 8th grade and above.

The district’s announcement indicates that the MacBook Neo will be the primary device for students, given its educational price of $499. This lower-cost laptop has garnered significant interest from educational institutions, putting pressure on Apple’s supply chain.
Despite the overwhelming demand for the MacBook Neo, some concerns have been raised about Apple’s use of leftover iPhone chips to cut costs. The laptop runs on an A18 Pro chip with slightly reduced specifications compared to the iPhone 16 Pro models. As demand outstrips supply, Apple may incur additional costs by restarting production lines for the A18 Pro chip.
Speculation arose about Apple discontinuing the 256 GB MacBook Neo, similar to the recent decision with the Mac mini. However, industry experts believe that Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has accounted for the need to produce more A18 Pro chips in the company’s forecasts and pricing strategies.
The entry-level MacBook Neo is targeted at educational institutions and price-conscious students, offering a budget-friendly option with essential features. In contrast, the $599 Mac mini faced challenges as its price increase affected its adoption in AI server farms.
