Microsoft reports sinking Xbox revenue as its cloud business climbs

Microsoft’s Xbox Hardware Revenue Declines by 33%

In the latest earnings report released by Microsoft on Wednesday, it was revealed that the company’s Xbox hardware revenue has experienced a significant 33 percent decline. Despite this downturn in the consumer-focused division, Microsoft’s cloud and productivity businesses continue to thrive, propelling the company towards a revenue of $82.9 billion.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s Strategy

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed these changes during an earnings call, emphasizing the company’s efforts to “win back fans” across all its brands, including Xbox. Nadella highlighted the team’s renewed commitment to core fans and players, shaping the future of gaming. He also mentioned recent changes to Game Pass as a response to customer feedback.

Microsoft’s Focus on Cloud and AI

In addition to organizational changes, Microsoft has been expanding its presence in AI, reporting a substantial $54.5 billion revenue from its cloud business, a 29 percent increase year-over-year. Nadella emphasized the company’s dedication to delivering cloud and AI solutions that empower businesses in the evolving computing landscape. The AI business saw impressive growth, surpassing an annual revenue run rate of $37 billion, a 123% increase from the previous year. Revenue from Azure and other cloud services also rose by 40 percent.

Microsoft 365 Copilot and Productivity Suite Expansion

Microsoft 365 Copilot witnessed growth, with paid seats rising from 15 million to 20 million in the previous quarter. The company has been enhancing its productivity suite with new AI features, such as the introduction of “vibe working” features in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Microsoft reported a 33 percent increase in Microsoft 365 consumer cloud revenue and a 19 percent increase in the commercial segment during the quarter.
