Microsoft is laying off 4,800 employees

Microsoft Announces Further Layoffs Amidst Changing Technology Landscape

In a move that comes a year after a significant workforce reduction, Microsoft has decided to lay off approximately 4,800 employees as it kicks off its new financial year. This accounts for about 2.1 percent of its total workforce. The majority of those affected belong to Microsoft’s commercial sales and Xbox divisions.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief people officer, attributed the layoffs to the evolving technology industry and the necessity to adapt resources and roles to address the impact of AI on companies like Microsoft. While clarifying that the eliminated positions will not be filled by AI, Coleman acknowledged that AI is reshaping the nature of work.

The Xbox division is expected to bear a significant brunt of the layoffs, with around 1,600 employees being impacted today. Microsoft plans to trim approximately 20 percent of Xbox jobs by the end of the financial year while also divesting four Xbox studios and considering the sale of another in an effort to revamp its struggling Xbox business.

Coleman emphasized the challenging nature of such decisions and reiterated Microsoft’s commitment to minimizing job losses by redeploying employees into roles aligned with the company’s strategic priorities. She highlighted the success of redeploying over 4,000 employees into new positions over the past year, including 500 in the current month.

Despite the layoffs, Microsoft had initially tried to avoid them through a voluntary retirement program. Employees in the US meeting specific age and service criteria were eligible for voluntary retirement, which included healthcare coverage, severance payment, and stock option vesting. More than 30 percent of eligible employees opted for this program.

Looking ahead, Coleman assured that Microsoft would continue exploring similar approaches to support its workforce. While acknowledging the difficulty of the recent layoffs, she reiterated the company’s commitment to creating opportunities, minimizing job losses, and providing support to affected employees.
