Samsung One UI 9 Introduces Screen Time Feature, Filling Gap Left by Google
In today’s digital age, screen time has become a major concern, with smartphones being the primary culprit. Both Android and iOS offer tools to monitor phone usage, but these solutions may not be effective in curbing excessive scrolling habits.
Google is stepping up its game with the introduction of the ‘Pause Point’ feature on Android 17. This feature temporarily restricts access to distracting apps, prompting users to take a breather or switch to more fulfilling activities. However, it can be easily bypassed by simply waiting for 10 seconds or restarting the phone.
On the other hand, Samsung’s new One UI 9 feature takes a more proactive approach to limiting phone usage. Within the beta version of One UI 9 for Galaxy S26 devices, a hidden feature called ‘Network restriction’ automatically disables the network connection when users open flagged distracting apps.
This means that when you open a distracting app, your internet connection will be cut off, rendering the app useless. This feature can be customized by setting a ‘Downtime’ schedule to restrict certain apps to offline mode, perfect for music or video streaming services.
Samsung categorizes apps into groups like Browser, Game, Social, Streaming, Other, and Preset to make it easier for users to manage their restrictions. While there are ways to bypass these controls by changing the schedule or entering a ‘Network controls PIN,’ it can be a useful addition to parental controls like Google Family Link.
While these network restrictions are a step in the right direction, they may not address deeper issues related to excessive phone use. It may require a combination of strategies to tackle these issues effectively. For example, restricting network access based on specific websites could be a more advanced feature.
Despite its limitations, introducing friction in accessing distracting apps is essential for maintaining a healthy relationship with your smartphone. Network restriction offers a balance between access and control, allowing users to use their devices as tools without succumbing to distractions.
As a Galaxy Z Fold 7 user, I am eager to try out the One UI 9 feature. With the expected debut of One UI 9 alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Fold 8 series in July, users won’t have to wait long to experience these enhanced controls.
