Google Earth’s Hidden Flight Simulator Now Accessible Through Web Browser

Google has unveiled a previously lesser-known feature of Google Earth, making it available to a broader audience. Since 2007, the desktop version of Google Earth has housed a hidden flight simulator mode, which can now be easily accessed through a web browser without the need for downloading or installing any additional applications.

How to Access the Flight Simulator

To embark on a virtual flying experience, users simply need to visit the Google Earth website and click on the “Explore Earth” button located near the top right corner of the page. Within the Tools section of the site’s top menu bar, the “Flight Simulator” mode can be found as the last option. For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to select an intriguing location on the map, as the default starting point may be a featureless ocean. Additionally, switching Google Earth’s basemap type from Map to Satellite enhances the realism of the experience.

Flight Control and Navigation

Google has provided a detailed help page outlining how users can maneuver their aircraft using either the keyboard or mouse. While the simulator may not offer the same level of complexity and realism as games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, mastering the controls will require some practice to navigate the aircraft without accidents. In the event of a crash, the simulator pauses and offers the option to reset the aircraft to a safe altitude.
