BMW’s Design Evolution: The Story Behind the Grille Choices

Article Summary

  • BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk reveals that some of the early i3 design sketches had the vertical grille.
  • It works on the iX3 because it has a taller front section.
  • For the 3 Series, the design team went instead with the horizontal kidneys to better suit the sedan’s lower, sportier stance.

BMW has a rich history of car design, with countless sketches and concepts shaping the iconic brand. One such revelation comes from BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, who shared insights into the design process behind the new i3.

During the early stages of development, the design team experimented with a vertical grille for the electric 3 Series Sedan. However, after careful consideration, they opted for a different direction, ultimately selecting the tall and narrow kidneys that better complemented the car’s front end.

Van Hooydonk explains, “For the 3 Series, the vertical grille would have looked too retro and not as sporty. The horizontal grille was chosen to enhance the sporty character of the vehicle.”

The unique grille design choices extend beyond the i3 and iX3 models. Future releases like the X5/iX5 and Neue Klasse iX1 are set to feature distinct grille layouts tailored to their front end proportions.

Lower vehicles, such as the 3 Series Touring and potential i4 Coupe, are likely to adopt the horizontal kidney grille design seen on the i3. This approach ensures a cohesive look that integrates seamlessly with the vehicle’s headlights.

While some models like the 7 Series facelift and updated 5 Series maintain their classic grille styles, BMW’s lineup is gradually evolving towards less intrusive grille designs. The introduction of the iX and XM models signals a shift towards a more streamlined grille aesthetic across the brand’s portfolio.
