Honda Recalls About 440,000 Odysseys for Faulty Side Airbags With 25 Injuries Reported

Honda Recalls Almost 440,000 Odyssey Models Over Faulty Airbags

Honda has recently issued a voluntary recall for nearly 440,000 Odyssey models due to a concerning issue with the side airbags. These airbags have been found to deploy unexpectedly after encountering a significant impact, such as hitting a pothole or speed bump too hard.

This recall specifically impacts vans that were sold in the United States, with the affected models being those sold between the years 2018 and 2022. While Honda has confirmed approximately 25 injuries related to the faulty airbags, there have been no reported deaths associated with this issue.

The root cause of the problem lies within the airbag module itself, which has been found to have an overly sensitive deployment threshold. This sensitivity leads to the side airbags deploying without warning when the vehicle experiences a harsh impact, typically when driving over a pothole, speed bump, or road debris. The sudden deployment of the side airbags can potentially result in a crash or cause injuries to passengers.

Owners of affected models are urged to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer for necessary actions, which may include reprogramming the airbag module or replacing it with a properly functioning one. Honda has committed to reaching out to registered owners via mail or through vehicle notifications. Alternatively, owners can check if their vehicle is affected by contacting 888-234-2138 or visiting Honda’s recall website.
