Amazon Strikes Deal with Oprah for Exclusive Video Podcast Rights
Amazon Secures Oprah Winfrey’s Video Podcast for Streaming Services
Amazon has recently struck a deal with renowned talk show host Oprah Winfrey to bring her video podcasts to its streaming services.
Matt Sandler, general manager of Amazon Creator Services, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting Oprah’s longstanding connection with audiences and her influence in reshaping entertainment.
The multi-year agreement grants Amazon distribution and advertising rights to “The Oprah Podcast” in both audio and video formats. Winfrey will increase her production output to two new episodes per week starting this summer. Additionally, Amazon gains access to Winfrey’s 25-year talk show library, as well as her popular franchises like “Oprah’s Book Club” and “Oprah’s Favorite Things.”
The New York Times initially reported on this significant deal, emphasizing Amazon’s strategy of leveraging established names to anchor its creator initiatives.
Steve Boom, an Amazon vice president, hailed the deal as a validation of the evolving content landscape, particularly the rise of creator-led, video-first content.
Amazon’s acquisition of Wondery in late 2020 aimed to bolster its original audio offerings, competing with platforms like Spotify. The company’s subsequent restructuring efforts, including integrating Wondery operations into Audible and launching the Creator Services division, have been part of this strategic move.
Amazon’s spokesperson underscored the evolving podcast landscape, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting creators in monetizing their content and expanding their brand presence across various platforms.
Aside from Oprah Winfrey, Amazon has made other high-profile moves in this direction, such as the Kelce Clubhouse featuring football stars Jason and Travis Kelce. This hub showcases their video podcast, merchandise, a documentary about the brothers, and promoted Audible content.
While Winfrey’s content will be available on Prime Video, Amazon Music, Fire TV Channels, and Audible, it will also be accessible on YouTube and other podcast platforms, expanding its global reach.
Oprah Winfrey expressed enthusiasm about reaching a global audience and connecting through stories that offer new perspectives and deeper understanding.
