Google DeepMind Staff Unionize to Prevent AI Technology Use by Military

A significant development has taken place at Google DeepMind’s headquarters as staffers have voted to unionize. The primary motivation behind this move is to prevent the AI firm’s technology from being utilized by the military forces of Israel and the United States. In a letter addressed to Google management, employees have requested the recognition of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union as joint representatives. Notably, 98 percent of CWU members at DeepMind showed support for this decision through their votes.

An unnamed DeepMind employee emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI models are not complicit in international law violations. The employee highlighted concerns about the firm’s technology being used to aid in what is described as Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. The statement shared by the CWU expressed the urgency of ending any involvement that contributes to making genocide more efficient and cost-effective.

If successful, the unionization effort would provide representation for over 1,000 staff members based at Google DeepMind’s London headquarters. Management now has a 10-day window to voluntarily acknowledge the unionization endeavors before legal procedures are initiated to compel recognition.

The unionization bid includes specific demands that address the employees’ concerns. These demands encompass a commitment from Google to refrain from developing weapons, technologies, or contracts that harm or surveil individuals. Furthermore, negotiations are sought regarding the use of AI that significantly impacts the employees’ roles, workloads, or job security. The bid also calls for the right of workers to abstain from projects that conflict with their personal moral or ethical standards.

In addition to these demands, DeepMind staff globally are considering in-person protests and research strikes to protest against Google’s military-industrial AI contracts. These actions could involve abstaining from working on enhancements to Google AI services like the Gemini AI assistant as part of a broader campaign against such contracts.

Efforts to seek comments from Google on this matter are currently underway.

These developments follow a recent open letter signed by hundreds of Google employees urging CEO Sundar Pichai to reject signing classified AI contracts with the Pentagon. Despite this, Google, along with OpenAI and Nvidia, proceeded to sign agreements allowing the US Department of Defense to utilize their AI models for lawful government purposes. Notably, in 2024, Google terminated over 50 employees following a protest over the company’s military connections with the Israeli government.

John Chadfield, CWU national officer for tech workers, emphasized the significance of tech workers at Google’s frontier AI lab aligning with oppressed communities worldwide through solidarity and trade unionism. By collectively asserting their rights, these workers are in a strong position to demand that their employer refrain from engaging in military-industrial contracts that raise ethical concerns. This resonates with the sentiments of many working individuals in the UK and beyond.
