Fragrance Tech Company Patina Raises $2 Million in Funding

Fragrance technology company Patina recently announced that it has secured $2 million in funding from investors, including Betaworks and True Ventures.

The company’s focus lies in developing new scent molecules through advanced molecular design, machine learning, and scent research. Traditionally, scent molecules used in consumer products are produced by specialized labs and then sold to fragrance houses or cosmetics companies. Patina aims to disrupt this process by introducing innovation into an industry that has seen minimal change in the past fifty years.

Co-founded by Sean Raspet and Laura Sisson, the company brings together Raspet’s background as an artist and perfumer with Sisson’s expertise in food and software engineering. The duo met at a scent art gallery in New York in 2024 and decided to collaborate on understanding scent at a biological level, leading to the inception of Patina.

The company’s flagship model, Sense1, replicates scent receptors in the nose to create a universal code for smell and taste. By working at the receptor level, Patina can develop unique scent molecules and recreate rare natural ingredients, providing a more precise and consistent system for describing scents compared to traditional methods.

Patina is already in discussions with top fragrance houses and fashion brands to collaborate on custom scents. With increasing demand for new and expressive perfumes, the company’s synthetic alternatives offer a sustainable solution to the challenges posed by dwindling natural resources.

In addition to competitors like Osmo, Patina leverages artificial intelligence to accelerate the creation of custom scent ingredients, offering perfumers and flavorists the opportunity to develop and protect their signature styles more efficiently.

AI plays a crucial role in transforming the scent industry, enabling advancements in areas such as animal testing reduction and molecular-level understanding of primary scents. Patina’s recent funding has facilitated the expansion of its team and resources, driving innovation in scent creation and partnership development.

Looking ahead, Patina aims to establish a universal system for scent creation akin to Pantone for colors, providing a comprehensive framework for building any smell or flavor from primary scent molecules. This vision reflects the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of scent technology and unlocking new possibilities in the industry.
