Paris-based Apolownia raises €1 million to scale coastal restoration and blue carbon projects

Apolownia, a company based in Paris, is dedicated to developing high-integrity coastal ecosystem restoration projects. Recently, the company announced the successful closure of its first Seed round, securing a total of €1 million in funding.

This funding round was made possible with the support of LITA, Bpifrance, as well as a consortium of business angels and individual investors.

“In a time where efficiency is a top priority and technology is more accessible than ever, our on-ground presence sets us apart. By overseeing the entire process, we serve as our clients’ sole point of contact, from fieldwork to impact measurement,” stated Théo Derache, the CEO and co-founder of Apolownia.

Established in 2024, Apolownia is a purpose-driven organization committed to making a significant impact in the climate sector. The company’s mission is to assist entities in transitioning towards a sustainable future by restoring natural carbon sinks and revitalizing biodiversity through comprehensive climate initiatives.

According to Apolownia, the environmental market is undergoing a significant transformation, with companies not only urged to reduce their emissions but also to actively sequester residual carbon and restore ecosystems to meet climate targets such as SBTi.

“Driven by regulatory changes and increasing expectations, companies are seeking highly credible carbon projects that are transparent, measurable, auditable, additional, and long-lasting, showcasing tangible impact on ecosystems,” the company highlighted in a press release.

Apolownia claims to meet this demand by specializing in coastal ecosystem restoration and blue carbon. Their approach combines scientific and technological expertise, including satellite remote sensing, geospatial analysis, modeling, drones, 3D modeling, advanced MRV, digital tools, and AI, with on-the-ground experience encompassing local teams, community engagement, biodiversity conservation, social initiatives, land-tenure work, benefit sharing, and local governance.

To address the sector’s fragmentation and enhance project quality and predictability, Apolownia consolidates the entire development process, including site identification, feasibility assessment, structuring, monitoring, biodiversity and social activities, land-tenure work, benefit sharing, governance, and long-term supervision.

One of their flagship projects is BlueRizon, a mangrove restoration initiative in Indonesia targeting over 4,000 hectares. Developed in collaboration with local partners, the project is set to officially launch in the third quarter of 2026.

Apolownia revealed that more than 3,000 individuals are already involved in the project, with potential benefits extending to over one hundred thousand people through climate resilience for coastal communities, erosion mitigation, adaptation to sea-level rise, biodiversity revival, and local economic growth.

The company intends to utilize the raised capital to expand its model, advance BlueRizon, reinforce structuring and deployment capabilities, and continue investing in scientific research, technology, and monitoring. Apolownia aims to establish itself as a global standard for high-integrity restoration, spanning from mangroves to seagrass meadows, coastal peatlands, and coral reefs.
