Accelerating Access: Microsoft’s Fast-Track to Restore Windows Hardware Development Accounts
Microsoft Implements Fast-Track Process to Help Developers Regain Access
Microsoft has introduced a swift process to assist developers in recovering access to accounts recently suspended from its Windows Hardware Program. This move comes in response to widespread complaints from developers who found themselves locked out of their accounts without prior notice.
Recently, the company suspended Windows Hardware Developer accounts that are utilized to publish Windows drivers and updates for popular tools like WireGuard, VeraCrypt, MemTest86, and Windscribe.
These suspensions had a significant impact as developers were unable to release new Windows builds and security patches, leading to concerns regarding potential delays in addressing vulnerabilities.
Developers such as VeraCrypt developer Mounir Idrassi, WireGuard maintainer Jason A. Donenfeld, and others shared their experiences of having their accounts terminated without warning. They struggled to reach a human support representative, leaving them unable to publish Windows updates.
Following the uproar from developers, Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman clarified that the accounts were suspended due to a failure in completing identity verification in the Windows Hardware Program. The company had been notifying partners about this requirement since October 2025.
Identity verification is a crucial step in the Windows Hardware Program as it enables developers to sign and distribute kernel-level drivers, which operate with high privileges and have been exploited by threat actors in previous attacks.
Despite Microsoft’s explanation, many developers claimed they did not receive any prior notification, including emails, before their accounts were suspended.
In response to the situation, Microsoft introduced a temporary process to expedite the reinstatement of suspended accounts. This move aims to address the challenges faced by partners in regaining access to the Hardware Dev Center.
The new process requires developers to open a support case through the Hardware Program for a quicker reinstatement of their accounts. They must provide a clear business justification explaining how they intend to use access to the Hardware Dev Center.
Once reinstated, developers must resolve all outstanding compliance requirements before full access is restored. Microsoft also addressed issues with the support workflow and advised partners to ensure they are signed in with the correct account when submitting tickets.
For developers unable to submit requests through standard channels, Microsoft provided an alternative support contact to initiate the process.
It is essential for affected developers to act promptly as Microsoft has not specified how long the accelerated process will be in effect.
