Apple is said to be developing a new security feature for the iPhone that will automatically lock the device when it detects that it has been grabbed from the user’s hand, according to a report from 9to5Mac.

Cases of snatch-and-grab iPhone thefts have been reported in the past, where users have had their phones stolen in a matter of seconds. In London, thieves are increasingly targeting smartphone users on city streets, with nearly 300 phones stolen daily, as reported by iDrop News in October.

The reason for snatching a smartphone directly from the user’s hand instead of pickpocketing is that unlocked iPhones are easier to access for data theft, such as banking information, photos, and more. Apple has implemented various anti-theft measures over the years, including Activation Lock, Stolen Device Protection, and enhanced Find My feature. However, these measures are less effective if the device is stolen while in use.

Recent reports from 9to5Mac suggest that Apple is working on a new feature that will automatically lock the iPhone if it detects a snatch from the user’s hand. Similar to Android’s Theft Detection Lock, this feature will use the device’s accelerometer to confirm the snatch and lock the phone. It will also consider the proximity of the iPhone to an Apple Watch if paired.

The “snatch detection” feature will follow rules similar to Stolen Device Protection, checking for known Wi-Fi networks and familiar locations. If the iPhone is detected in an unfamiliar location, it will automatically lock and restrict access to prevent unauthorized use.

Stolen Device Protection already requires biometric authentication for critical actions, such as accessing passwords or credit card information. However, until the latest iOS update, these security measures were not enabled by default, leaving room for exploitation by thieves.

While details on the release of the anti-snatch-and-grab protection feature are not yet available, it is in active development. It may be unveiled during the upcoming WWDC26 keynote address, where Apple is expected to preview iOS 27 for release in the fall.
