BYD says Australians will decide if it can topple Toyota

BYD is confident that Australian consumers will play a significant role in determining when it surpasses Toyota as the leading sales brand in the country. This confidence comes after BYD secured the second spot in overall sales for the second consecutive month in May 2026, showcasing a remarkable sales surge.

Toyota Australia, however, still maintains a comfortable lead with 76,017 new vehicle deliveries in the first five months of 2026, compared to BYD’s 33,454 units. Despite this, BYD has experienced exponential growth, more than doubling its sales from the previous year to narrow the gap between the two brands significantly.

The Chinese brand entered the Australian market in 2022 under importer EVDirect, with founder Luke Todd expressing ambitious goals to challenge Toyota’s market dominance by 2027. Following the takeover of Australian distribution by BYD in mid-2025, the brand has steadily increased its market share, particularly with popular models like the Sealion 7 SUV and the Shark 6 ute.

Toyota, a longstanding leader in Australian automotive sales since 2003, has seen a slight decline in market share from 20.3% to 15.5% year-on-year. Despite this, the company remains on track to deliver 220,000 vehicles in 2026 and continues to hold strong positions with models like the Corolla, HiLux, and RAV4.

BYD’s market share has seen a significant rise from 3.1% in May 2025 to 8.2% in May 2026, with the brand aiming to bring 30,000 vehicles to Australia by the end of June to meet growing demand, especially for electric vehicles (EVs). The company’s success in April and May sales further solidifies its position as a strong contender in the Australian automotive market.

In a recent event in Melbourne, BYD vice president Liu Xueliang emphasized the importance of Australian consumers in determining whether the brand can surpass Toyota in the future. While Toyota remains a formidable competitor, BYD’s strategic growth and focus on customer needs will play a crucial role in shaping the automotive landscape in Australia.

Toyota Australia’s recent press release highlighted the company’s commitment to delivering an additional 10,000 vehicles to meet demand and maintain its position in the market. With both brands vying for consumer attention and loyalty, the competition between BYD and Toyota is set to intensify, ultimately benefiting Australian car buyers with more choices and innovative offerings.
