NBA plans AI system for automatic out-of-bounds calls

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Announces Plans for Automated Officiating System

In a recent statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver revealed that the league is set to implement an automated system for specific officiating decisions, such as out-of-bounds calls. This system will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and cameras strategically positioned around the court to accurately determine possession, drawing parallels to Hawk-Eye, a technology commonly used in tennis for line calls.

Silver’s announcement comes in the wake of a controversial call during Game 5 of the Western Conference finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. The disputed out-of-bounds play involving Spurs center Victor Wembanyama and Thunder forward Chet Holmgren highlighted the need for more precise officiating methods.

With the NBA partnering with Hawk-Eye Innovations in 2023 to deploy 3D optical tracking technology, the league is taking significant steps towards enhancing officiating accuracy. This partnership followed extensive testing at Summer League and NBA arenas, ensuring that the system can track the ball and player movement in three dimensions with minimal latency.

While automated officiating systems are not new in sports, with tennis using electronic line calling and FIFA implementing semi-automated offside technology, the NBA’s move towards automation marks a significant shift in how on-court decisions are made. Silver emphasized the league’s intention to eventually remove objective calls, such as out-of-bounds, from the hands of on-court officials.

NBA’s Transition to Automated Officiating

Silver confirmed that the automated system will provide immediate possession rulings, regardless of the teams involved, thereby reducing the need for challenges on such calls. The NBA’s collaboration with Hawk-Eye and the adoption of advanced tracking technology signify a forward-looking approach to officiating.

While the league has already expanded its use of replay review and centralized officiating support through the Replay Center in Secaucus, New Jersey, the introduction of automated officiating for specific call categories represents a significant milestone in the NBA’s quest for enhanced accuracy and efficiency.

Coach’s Challenge and Refinement of Officiating Rules

Under current NBA rules, a Coach’s Challenge remains the sole method for triggering replay review of an out-of-bounds violation during a game. The league recently expanded this rule to allow officials to review potential fouls during certain out-of-bounds situations, further refining the officiating process.

Although the automated system will streamline possession calls, Silver clarified that referees will continue to be responsible for judgment-based decisions, particularly those involving contact and fouls. He highlighted the importance of distinguishing between incidental contact and fouls that impact a player’s movement, emphasizing the nuanced nature of officiating.

While Silver did not provide a specific timeline for implementing the automated system, he indicated that the NBA is moving towards this transition swiftly. The league’s commitment to leveraging technology for more accurate and efficient officiating reflects its dedication to upholding the integrity of the game.

As the NBA prepares to embrace automation in officiating, fans can expect a smoother and more consistent adjudication process, ultimately enhancing the overall viewing experience.
