BMW iX3: The Electric SUV Taking Europe by Storm

  • BMW Hungary recently organized nearly 300 test drives of 10 electric SUVs produced at the Debrecen plant.
  • During a static presentation, a high-end version of the iX3 50 xDrive with M Performance Parts was showcased.
  • Over 50 electric SUVs were swiftly delivered in Hungary following the local launch of the BMW iX3.

While the United States eagerly anticipates the arrival of the new BMW iX3, European customers are already enjoying deliveries. Since its launch in September 2025, the “NA5” has garnered over 50,000 orders on the continent. Such high demand prompted the addition of a second production shift at the Debrecen plant ahead of schedule. Early indications suggest a promising commercial future, with the electric SUV outselling the X3 “G45.” Remarkably, one in every three electric BMWs ordered in Europe is an iX3.

To maintain this momentum, BMW hosted a large-scale test-drive event for the second-generation iX3. From April 20 to 23 in Máriavölgy, nearly 300 participants had the opportunity to test drive a fleet of 10 vehicles, all in 50 xDrive specification. Although the only version currently available for purchase, a more affordable iX3 40 model will hit the market this summer. This entry-level variant features a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup with a smaller battery pack.

In addition to the driving experience, BMW also organized a static presentation to offer a detailed look at the new iX3. Notably, one vehicle was equipped with optional M Performance Parts, a rarity for the “NA5.” The available catalog includes a roof spoiler, front attachments, and a more prominent rear diffuser. Buyers can also opt for a matte side-body decal and a windshield-mounted M Performance Parts sticker.

BMW has introduced substantial changes to the electric SUV, making it essentially an all-new model unrelated to its previous CLAR-based version. From the Neue Klasse foundation and fresh design approach to the iDrive X interface and Gen6 batteries, almost everything has been revamped. A sleek iX4 with a coupe-like profile is expected to follow later this year, also produced at the Debrecen plant.

Meanwhile, the Hungarian division of BMW reported the swift delivery of over 50 iX3 units to customers shortly after the model’s local launch. With prices starting at 34,037,000 forints (approximately €93,200), the cost may seem steep. Nevertheless, Hungary boasts the highest value-added tax (VAT) in Europe at 27%.

The highly anticipated 2026 World Car of the Year will soon make its way to North America, with deliveries projected to commence by late September or early October. Expected to start at around $60,000, precise pricing details will be disclosed once the fully functional configurator goes live, possibly next month.

While BMW has unveiled a long-wheelbase iX3 “NA6,” this variant will unfortunately not be available in Europe or North America. Despite potential interest in this version, not solely due to its more spacious interior, the LWB model boasts superior interior materials compared to the “NA5,” along with exclusive features like a front-passenger legrest. China will be the first market to enjoy heated rear seats and eventually ventilated, massaging seats, features that will gradually trickle down to the standard-wheelbase iX3.
