Theodore Roosevelt Reimagined: A Historian’s Encounter with Microsoft’s AI Technology
Exploring the AI-Powered Avatar of President Theodore Roosevelt
President Theodore Roosevelt, known for his iconic quote “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” is brought back to life through an AI-powered avatar at the newly opened Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, N.D. This innovative technology allows visitors to interact with a lifelike version of the 26th president, engaging in conversations about his life, leadership, and legacy.
Renowned presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin was one of the high-profile visitors who had the opportunity to engage with the digital Roosevelt. She joined Microsoft President Brad Smith at the library, where they witnessed firsthand how artificial intelligence is used to preserve history and educate future generations.
During her interaction with the Roosevelt avatar, Goodwin asked probing questions about his relationship with JP Morgan, the evolving landscape of the country, and his enduring fighting spirit. The AI-powered avatar responded with insights and reflections on his legacy, emphasizing his commitment to staying active and impactful until the very end.
Impressed by the experience, Goodwin expressed her astonishment, highlighting the significance of this technological advancement in preserving historical figures and their narratives.
The AI technology behind the Roosevelt avatar is part of Box 1, a knowledge base that houses a vast collection of archival documents. Powered by Microsoft’s cutting-edge technology, this system organizes historical records, making them accessible and searchable for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
Furthermore, the Campfire Reading Room, powered by AI and Box 1, serves as a digital research tool for exploring Roosevelt’s writings, letters, and images. This initiative aims to make historical materials more accessible to a global audience, fostering a deeper understanding of Roosevelt’s contributions to American history.
Microsoft’s collaboration with the library through its AI for Good Lab demonstrates a commitment to advancing cultural preservation through technology. By open-sourcing the software used in the project and documenting its functionality, Microsoft aims to empower other institutions to leverage AI for historical preservation.
As technology continues to evolve, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library will adapt and grow alongside it. The dynamic nature of AI ensures that the Roosevelt avatar will continuously update with new information and context, keeping the experience fresh and engaging for visitors.
Laura Hoffman, senior director of the AI for Good Lab, emphasizes the importance of AI technology in maintaining the relevance of cultural institutions. By harnessing the power of AI, the library can provide a dynamic and immersive experience for visitors, ensuring that history remains accessible and engaging for future generations.
