- Don’t miss Olafur Eliasson’s rare hydrogen-prototype-based installation, showcased publicly only three times since 2007.
For the first time ever, the entire collection of 20 BMW Art Cars will be on display under one roof at BMW Welt in Munich. This momentous occasion, titled “BMW Art Cars — 20 Artists, 50 Years of Innovation. Reunited at BMW Welt,” will take place from July 29 to August 31, 2026, with the opening ceremony scheduled for July 28. This exhibition marks the grand finale of the BMW Art Car World Tour, a global showcase that commenced in March 2025 to celebrate the collection’s 50th anniversary.
The origins of the BMW Art Car collection trace back to 1975 when French racing driver Herve Poulain convinced Jochen Neerpasch, the head of BMW Motorsport at the time, to invite artist Alexander Calder to paint a race car. The result was a visually striking BMW 3.0 CSL that competed at Le Mans that same year, captivating onlookers with Calder’s bold geometric design on a racing livery. This initial collaboration sparked a tradition that has spanned five decades and featured contributions from renowned artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Jenny Holzer, and many others.
Each BMW Art Car serves as a unique snapshot of its era, reflecting the intersection of BMW’s evolution, the racing landscape, and contemporary art trends at the time of its creation. From Warhol’s M1 in 1979 to Rauschenberg’s 635 CSi in 1986 and Cao Fei’s M6 GT3 in 2017, the collection showcases a diverse range of artistic styles spanning Minimalism, Pop Art, and Digital Art. When all 20 Art Cars are brought together, they narrate a compelling visual story of artistic evolution and innovation.
The Return of Eliasson’s Frozen Installation
One of the most anticipated highlights of the exhibition is Olafur Eliasson’s groundbreaking contribution from 2007. The BMW H2R Project, based on a hydrogen prototype, transcends traditional car artistry as an installation that necessitates a frozen environment for optimal presentation. With only three public showings to date, the inclusion of Eliasson’s piece adds a rare and exceptional dimension to the showcase.
Julie Mehretu’s Art Car: A Cultural Initiative

Julie Mehretu’s BMW M Hybrid V8, the latest addition to the Art Car collection in 2024, represents a departure from conventional approaches. Mehretu used the Art Car project as a catalyst for the African Film and Media Arts Collective (AFMAC), collaborating with filmmaker Mehret Mandefro to launch a broader cultural initiative uniting artists and filmmakers from Africa and its diaspora. The resulting exhibition, “Turning Towards the Sun,” is set to debut at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town in December 2026.
By the Numbers: The BMW Art Car World Tour

Prior to its Munich showcase, the BMW Art Car World Tour made stops at 60 locations across more than 30 countries, attracting over two million visitors. From prestigious art fairs like Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Dubai to iconic venues such as Le Mans, Pebble Beach, and the ADI Design Museum in Milan, the tour has captivated audiences worldwide. The exhibition’s penultimate destinations are the Classic Car House in Copenhagen (open until June 21) and the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como (scheduled for May 15-17). Visitors can explore the Munich exhibition daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at BMW Welt, located at Am Olympiapark 1. Stay tuned for ticketing information to be announced soon.
