Exciting Updates Coming for Android Users in July
Android users are in for a treat as Google is rolling out a new Google Play System update. This update will bring new features to Android smartphones every month, regardless of the device’s manufacturer.
According to a report by 9to5Google, Android users will now have the ability to control the backup of SMS, MMS, and RCS messages directly. This new feature is similar to the separate backup setting for selected apps that was recently introduced.
After receiving the update, users will find a new on/off switch for SMS and MMS messages, call history, and device settings under “Settings > Accounts and Backup > Google Backup > Additional device data”. This enhanced control allows users to choose which data they want to store in the Google Cloud.
This update is especially significant as Google has recently discontinued offering free backups for Android devices. Every backup now counts towards the user’s available storage quota, which is limited to just 15GB in the free version.

Furthermore, Android now offers local document backups, allowing users to automatically save downloaded documents to Google Drive for secure access across all their devices. A new menu called “Documents” will appear on the “Backup” page alongside “Photos & Videos” and “Other device data”. Supported file formats include .DOC, .PPT, .XLS, .PDF, and all other documents stored on the device, with encryption during transfer to Google’s services.
More updates
Google System Services’ release notes reveal additional minor updates being rolled out to Android users. These updates include a revamped in-app purchase experience using an improved, native storefront for Google One, the ability to transfer work profiles to Wear OS smartwatches, a new Google location sharing feature for Chromebooks, and new features for developers to support Google Maps processes within their apps.
All these new features have been gradually rolling out to Android users since 6 July. Users can check their currently installed Google Play System Updates version and update if needed by navigating to “Settings > Security and Privacy > Updates > Google Play System Update”.
