Unveiling the Future: Lexus TZ Electric SUV Set to Take the Stage
Lexus has released a sneak peek of its upcoming three-row electric SUV with a mysterious teaser image and has announced the official unveiling date for later this week. The highly anticipated flagship electric SUV from the Japanese luxury brand, rumored to be named the Lexus TZ, is scheduled to make its debut in the US on Thursday at 11.30am AEST. Lexus Australia has hinted at the arrival of something new without providing any further details.
The name TZ was suggested by trademark filings in Europe for the TZ450e and TZ550e nameplates in mid-2023. The SUV was also spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring in April this year. The teaser image of the vehicle’s silhouette indicates that the TZ might be based on the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, which was unveiled earlier this year. This alignment with the Toyota Highlander EV follows Lexus’ strategy of basing their electric vehicles on Toyota’s platforms, similar to the relationship between the RZ mid-size SUV and the Toyota bZ4X.
It is speculated that the TZ will serve as the electric counterpart to the North American-exclusive Lexus TX, mirroring the relationship between the RZ and RX models. While Toyota has indicated that the Highlander EV is unlikely to be offered in Australia, it remains uncertain if the Lexus TZ will be available in the Australian market. However, reports from Japanese sources suggest that an electric version of the TX will be launched in Japan this year, hinting at the possibility of a right-hand drive version of the new Lexus SUV.
The TZ will mark the third model derived from the Highlander EV platform to be produced by a brand other than Toyota, following the recent debut of the Subaru Getaway. The TZ is expected to feature a distinctive design compared to the Highlander EV, with unique styling elements such as split LED headlights and aggressive body lines. The interior of the TZ is likely to be luxuriously appointed, incorporating advanced technology such as a large touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster.
Similar to the Highlander EV, the TZ is anticipated to offer both six- and seven-seat configurations, with spacious seating arrangements including captain’s chairs in the second row. The size of the TZ is expected to closely match that of the Highlander EV, with similar dimensions and powertrain options. The Highlander EV boasts impressive performance figures, with power outputs ranging from 165kW/269Nm to 252kW/438Nm and a choice of battery sizes offering substantial driving range.
While pricing details for the TZ have not been disclosed, comparisons can be drawn with competitors such as the Volvo EX90 and Cadillac Vistiq, which cater to the luxury three-row electric SUV segment. Lexus Australia recently reduced the starting price of the RZ model, signaling a competitive pricing strategy for their electric lineup. The unveiling of the TZ will expand Lexus’ electric vehicle portfolio, joining the existing Toyota bZ4X, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra models.
In conclusion, the Lexus TZ represents a significant milestone in Lexus’ electrification journey, offering a blend of luxury, performance, and advanced technology in a three-row electric SUV package. The unveiling of the TZ is eagerly awaited by enthusiasts and industry observers alike, as it promises to deliver a compelling alternative in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
