Microsoft Announces Major Layoffs and Business Changes for Xbox Division

Following weeks of speculation, Microsoft has unveiled significant layoffs and business restructuring plans for its Xbox division. Over the next year, approximately 3,200 employees will be impacted, with 1,600 job cuts announced today. Additionally, four studios will either become independent or find new ownership, while one studio’s fate remains uncertain.

Update: In a broader context, the restructuring will result in a 20% reduction in the Xbox and gaming division headcount, affecting a total of around 4,800 employees.

Compulsion Games and Double Fine will retain their independence, allowing them to keep their intellectual property and continue work on current projects. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, featured in the Xbox Showcase, have also found new owners, ensuring the completion of their respective games.

While these developments have been positive for some studios, Arkane’s future, particularly their Marvel’s Blade project, remains uncertain. The studio, based in France, is now engaging in discussions with its Works Council to explore strategic options.

Today’s layoffs will impact teams across Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has acknowledged the need for these changes, citing the company’s focus on Game Pass, multi-platform initiatives, and diverse content offerings. Despite the value created by these ventures, they did not meet growth expectations.

Sharma emphasized the importance of streamlining management structures, aiming to reduce the number of management layers to enhance efficiency and decision-making processes.

Mojang and King will now report directly to Sharma, while a new Chief Operating Officer position, filled by Xbox veteran Helen Chiang, will help align strategic goals across Microsoft’s various divisions.

While the scale of the layoffs is significant, the outcome is less severe than initially feared. The four studios departing from Xbox are transitioning to independence or new ownership, dispelling concerns of closure. Rumors surrounding other studios like Rare and Obsidian have fortunately not materialized.
